For us, this project needs to be as cost-effective as possible. Through our research on airstreams so far, we have seen that this project can get expensive—- fast. We posted on the Airstream Renovation page on Facebook to find advice about what to do with the aluminum walls covered in wallpaper, or cheap alternatives to walls. Airstreamers gave some awesome advice about cleaning products they used on their walls to completely clean them up and reuse them.

Because of this, we determined that it would be worth trying to clean up the walls. Once this was decided, we needed to come up with a system for removing the walls and labeling them— more advice from the group. This was a job I could do! I drew some quick airstream sketches, including window locations, wheel wells, and hatches. I made a sketch for the left side and the right side if you are standing inside and looking at the side walls.

When Brandon starting pulling off the walls, battling with the lovely rivets along the way, I labeled the backside of the wall and then drew where the wall piece was on the sheet. I gave each piece a label, beginning with L for the left side and R for the right side, and then numbering them in order. Pretty simple. But completely necessary.

We were extremely glad to have done it this way, especially once we started pulling off the pieces. Our walls were overlapped at parts, especially around the windows. For the one side, I used another color to draw out the section so that the overlapping stood out. I am anticipating that this will help us once we begin to put back up our clean, ready to be painted, walls. Crossing my fingers on this one, friends! Aluminum strips are expensive and we ideally want to avoid that additional cost!

Much love,

Lauren
