Our drive from North Carolina to the very bottom tip of South Carolina was relatively uneventful. We stopped at South of the Border on our way, and had lunch and stretched our legs.

The drive was surprisingly long, and Brandon was getting tired. We had gotten up early to beat the heavier rain storms coming, and we wanted to get away from the rain! Brandon needed some coffee to keep going, so we pulled into a gas station/McDonald’s. Brandon hopped out, saying that he was going to check things quick and then head in to get coffee. Well, that was short lived. He came back to the front seat and told me that the bike rack had completely detached from the bumper and was hanging on with the ratchet straps Brandon had added extra of. Well, there goes that!

Brandon removed the spare tire from the rack and packed it all up in the Jeep. I grabbed coffee, and then we were on the road again! It seems there are DAILY challenges with this trip and trying to navigate our new way of life.

We arrived in Hardeeville, South Carolina at Camp Lake Jasper. We were pleasantly surprised by this park! While it wasn’t the cheapest park we would stay at this entire trip, it may have been the nicest and most well-maintained. Our spot had a great concrete pad right outside of our trailer, which was so nice! There was a lake, pool, and full bathroom and laundry facilities. And bonus- it was SO quiet. Almost no one spoke to us the entire time we were there… which I didn’t hate! We were definitely the only Airstream there… and we stuck out like a sore thumb! Definitely turned heads, especially since we were the spot in the park you could not miss.

The next day (Wednesday, June 17th), we headed to Savannah, GA- which was a quick 30 minute drive away. What a beautiful city. We parked and followed a map to the major places, like Forsyth Park and the Mercer House. I loved the Southern Live Oak trees with their dangling moss. Beautiful. They were everywhere! We also walked the length of River Street, which was your regular tourist junk, but some great restaurants and Savannah-only stores. We stopped for lunch and had a great overlook of the river and the bridge we passed into Savannah on. Didn’t stay much longer after lunch and headed back to our site.

That night, we met a great couple- Jason and Renee- who were from Harrisburg. We bonded on our mutual Pennsylvania residence. They had a large motorhome that had seen much of the United States. We got some great recommendations from them on places to go in the future. It was great to talk to some other travelers. We hadn’t really up to this point, but they made us feel welcome.

The next day, we FINALLY got to Hilton Head. The weather was beautiful. Perfect day for the beach. We made Coligny Beach Park our first stop. And with free parking, Brandon was already hooked. Ha! The beach was so clean and the water warm. It started to finally feel like vacation, being on a beach. I didn’t do much other than relax and take in the sounds of the ocean. After this, we walked around a touristy shop area, where we tried some local wine and beer. We also stopped at a great restaurant and had loaded hush puppies. Delicious. Something that was a must have for me, being in the south! We then drove further down the island, passed through the $8 gate (still don’t understand why you have to pay 8 DOLLARS to drive two miles down the road), and checked out Harbour Town. Since the PGA golf tournament was going on this day, we had to take a shuttle into the town. Pretty painless. The lighthouse was beautiful. We walked around a little, but the heat was getting to us. After eating a delicious bowl of ice cream for dinner, we headed back to our car.

Friends, it seems as though the rain follows us. We haven’t had many days without rain. It stinks because that rain seems to come around the time we need to pack up and leave…. That night we had a bad thunderstorm. While some of our things were on the concrete pad, other things were in the sandy patch. In the morning, they were covered in sand and damp. All that went in the car, on towels and in trash bags. Not fun.

On to our next leg of the trip!

Much love,

Lauren
